My daughter and niece had just turned 11, and my sister and I were like, “Ahhh man! Here we go… the preteen stage!” (BKA the drama years) There is nothing that could prepare us for the moodiness and attitudes of an adolescent daughter, but one thing we did not want us or them to be caught off guard by was the big P word, PERIODS! We thought to ourselves, how can we make this educational, yet fun and interactive. A lot of girls that age are uncomfortable talking about the “vajayjay”, but as any woman knows, vaginal health is SUPER important. That’s one area that we didn’t want them guessing along the way. When things aren’t good there, they’re NOT good. And baby let me tell you, in middle and high school, you will get clowned!!! Walk down the hallway with blood stains on your jeans, you’ll be trending at school by the end of the day. Don’t let there be an odor. You’ll never hear the end of it. We didn’t want them to have to experience any of that, so we threw them a party… a PERIOD PARTY!!!
We let the girls dress themselves in something they’d wear to a tween party, and each drove over to our parent’s house. That alone should have been a dead giveaway that it was a set-up! Who goes to a party at their grandparents’ house? LOL! We thought it would be extra special to include our mom, BKA Granny, in the conversation. Me being the extra festive person that I am curated gift boxes for the girls loaded with everything they needed for their “Coming of Age” talk. Who knew this was such a thing?! I was shocked to see how much literature was available on Amazon.
Want to host your own “Period Party” for a tween girl? Here’s a list of things to get:
- A collapsible tote or basket to fill with goodies
- A cosmetic pouch to keep in their backpacks filled with sanitation items such as:
- Tampons – Instruct them how to properly insert these
- Pads – Many tweens may not be ready for tampons. Pads are a great place to start. Put a few inside for them to change frequently throughout the day.
- Panty liners for light days
- Fresh wipes for on-the-go refreshening.
- Scented disposable bags – Teach them how to properly dispose their waste. Flushing is NOT an option. Neither is leaving it on the floor. YUCK.
- Spare clean underwear in case of leaks
- Black opaque tights in case of an accident
- Literature – Here are a few suggestions
- Pamprin – Check your child’s school policy for administering over the counter drugs.
- Menstrual heating patch for pain relief
- Feminine wash – Check with your gynecologist. Some are opposed to feminine washes.
Other things you may want to consider are just a bunch of fun “big girl” things like:
- Shaving Gel and razors
- Lip gloss
- A compact mirror
- Fashion magazines
- Cute hair pins
- Their favorite candy
- Bath & Body Works body & skincare stuff
- Etc.
When the girls walked into my mom’s house, there were red balloons floating all over the room. We even had red snacks like strawberries, juice, pepperoni pizza, the works. The point was to just have a good time with open conversation. Allow your daughter, niece, mentee, whomever to ask any and everything. Trust, this is not stuff you want them to learn any ol’ place.
