Did you know that kids are able to start taking on chores as early as age two? Yes, two! By two, kids are able to comprehend simple instructions, and follow them. Unfortunately, at this age, they are also capable of deciding if they in fact WANT to do what has been instructed. That’s another blog for another day. LOL
My youngest, Summer is very inquisitive, and loves to feel included. I believe for her, it’s the excitement of learning new things, and doing what her older siblings do. My older kids are all pre-teen and teens so they share a great deal of responsibility when it comes to household chores. Their primary responsibility in our home, as it relates to chores, is to keep their living quarters tidy. This includes bedrooms, bathrooms, and play areas. Other chores include laundry, kitchen duty, floors, and sometimes cooking. Cooking is always supervised, and more voluntary. However, it’s a also an important life skill in our home.
I remember growing up, my mom and grandmother would always include us in dinner prep. My dad is also a chef, so the love of cooking is natural for me. The goal was for us to at least learn the basics so that no matter where we were, college, on our own, married, we could survive. Cleanliness was also a course we had to master. I remember my mom stressing the importance of a clean home even if you lived alone and especially with others.
In our home, we all chip in on the upkeep. Having the kids help out around the house is more about developing healthy habits, and less about decreasing chores for mom and dad, although it is a perk. On Pinterest, I’ve shared chores that can be done by children at any age level.
